Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie’s cause of death has been revealed to be a massive stroke. The late singer also had metastatic cancer listed as a secondary cause of death.
The death certificate states the singer suffered an ischaemic stroke, a type of stroke that results in interrupted blood flow to the brain, usually due to a blood clot. The type of cancer is not mentioned, but is described as a “metastatic malignancy of unknown primary origin,” meaning it had spread throughout her body.
Christine McVie mentioned her poor health in one of the last interviews she gave to the public. Speaking to Rolling Stone, she said she didn’t envision being part of another Fleetwood Mac tour. “I’m in quite bad health. I’ve got a chronic back problem that debilitates me. I stand up to play the piano, so I don’t know if I could actually physically do it. What’s the saying? The mind is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
The cause of death was revealed after the death certificate became part of court documents in settling her $50 million estate. Her longtime business manager, Martin Wyatt, is the executor of her estate. McVie’s beneficiaries include her brother and his children, as well as various charitable causes the singer supported throughout her life.
Fleetwood Mac’s statement on Christine’s death was heartfelt. “We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being and revered musician who was loved universally.” Meanwhile fellow bandmate Lindsey Buckingham called her “a musical comrade, friend, a soul mate and a sister. Stevie Nicks wrote on social media at the time that she had lost her “best friend in the whole world.”
Some of the Fleetwood Mac hits that Christine McVie helped write include “Little Lies,” “Make Loving Fun,” “Oh Daddy,” and “Blackbird.”
