Lucasfilm has revealed three new Star Wars movies in development.

Announced during Star Wars Celebration’s Lucasfilm Studio Showcase, we learned about three Star Wars movies in the pipeline, including one coming from The Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni. Filoni’s movie takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, before The Force Awakens. In a blog post, Lucasfilm revealed that the movie will close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other New Republic-focused Disney+ series.

James Mangold was also confirmed to be directing a new upcoming Star Wars movie. Mangold’s movie will take us to a very early point on the Star Wars timeline, as the director said, “We came up with an incredible story to tell about the dawning of the Force.” Mangold’s movie will focus on the dawn of the Jedi.

We also learned about a movie that takes place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, which is the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project. Daisy Ridley’s Rey is returning in this movie as the Jedi Master as she builds a new Jedi Order. Ridley came on stage at Star Wars Celebration as part of the announcement. No release dates were shared for the three new films.

These three films mark Star Wars’ return to the big screen after a multiyear absence. The last theatrical Star Wars release was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which concluded The Skywalker Saga that began way back with the original Star Wars. Since then, the galaxy far, far away has pivoted to episodic storytelling on Disney+ through series like The Mandalorian, Andor, and more.

Many Star Wars movies have struggled to get off the ground in recent years, as movies from Kevin Feige, David Benioff & DB Weiss, and the Rogue Squadron movie were all cancelled. There’s also still a chance of seeing a trilogy from The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson at some point in the future, and a Star Wars movie from Taika Waititi is still in development.
