The RTX 4060 laptop GPU is set to appear later this month. Based on the AD107 “Lovelace” GPU, the card packs 3,072 CUDA cores, 8 GB of VRAM, a 128-bit memory bus, and a TGP of up to 115 W. Although Nvidia has yet to lift the embargo on the RTX 4060, a Chinese reviewer going by the name of “Zhongzheng Evaluations” has already put the GPU through its paces.
Nvidia announced the RTX 4060, RTX 4070 and RTX 4050 laptop GPUs for mid-range notebooks at CES 2023. Machines rocking these cards are set to appear starting February 22 which is when we will likely see reviews of the GPUs go live. However, a Chinese reviewer has now posted some synthetic and gaming benchmarks of the RTX 4060 laptop board and the results are excellent compared to the last-gen RTX 3060 mobile.
It is pertinent to mention that the RTX 4060 was running inside a ThunderRobot Zero notebook. Interestingly, the same machine has once appeared before on Geekbench giving us our first albeit disappointing OpenCL performance overview of the RTX 4060 and the RTX 4070 laptop cards. Apparently, the RTX 4060 in the ThunderRobot Zero was the Max-P model with an adjusted 140 W TDP.
Moving on to the performance, the 3DMark Time Spy score of the RTX 4060 laptop came out to be 10,359 which is in line with a previous showing where the card produced a score of 10,050. Compared to our median 3DMark Time Spy graphics score of the RTX 3060 mobile, the RTX 4060 is about 27% faster. The 3DMark Time Spy graphics score of the RTX 4060 laptop is also roughly on par with the RTX 3070 Ti mobile.
RTX 4060 laptop’s gaming performance is equally impressive. According to the Zhongzheng review on YouTube, the RTX 4060 mobile managed 96 fps in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at 1080p with the highest quality graphics preset. The reviewer noted that this score is more than the notebook RTX 3070 Ti. Similarly, the RTX 4060 also excelled in Tomb Raider with 138 fps at 1080p/Highest quality. However, here the card lagged behind the RTX 3070 Ti.
At 1440p, the RTX 4060 laptop and the RTX 3070 Ti mobile are neck and neck in Forza Horizon 5 (66 vs 67 fps), Cyberpunk 2077 (70.65 vs 71 fps), and Red Dead Redemption 2 (60.9 vs 66.8 fps). It should be noted that the RTX 4060 laptop has a rather narrow 128-bit wide memory bus. So, higher resolutions like 2K could pose problems for the GPU.
Long story short, just like the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4090 laptop GPUs, the RTX 4060 laptop appears to be a healthy generational upgrade over the RTX 3060 mobile as it seems to match the RTX 3070 Ti in performance. That said, the performance of the card discussed here is just from one review. So to have a holistic view of how much better the card is compared to last-gen offerings we have to wait for additional independent testing results.
