Intel announced in early 2022 that 14th gen Meteor Lake CPUs will debut in 2023. Based on the 7 nm Intel 4 process, the CPU tiles on Meteor Lake chips are reported to prioritize efficiency alongside delivering 15-28% IPC uplift for “Redwood Cove” P-cores and >15% IPC gain for “Crestmont” E-cores. The latest rumor now alleges that Meteor Lake will soundly beat Raptor Lake in terms of performance/watt.
Intel Meteor Lake is expected to debut some time in 2023, possibly in Q4. So far, leaks have claimed that Intel has canceled the top-of-the-line 22-core (6 P-core + 8 E-core) and 24-core (8 P-core + 16 E-core) desktop MTL-S SKUs in favor of a 14-core (6 P-core + 8 E-core) chip. Other reports have suggested that although 14th gen Meteor Lake processors will bring substantial performance uplifts over the 13th gen Raptor Lake CPUs, Team Blue’s focus with the 14th gen chips is efficiency. Giving credibility to this rumor, leaker OneRaichu has shared Intel’s alleged efficiency target for Meteor Lake CPUs.
Per OneRaichu, 14th gen Meteor Lake chips will be more than 1.5 times more efficient vs competing Raptor Lake SKUs. In other words, Meteor Lake could use less than half the energy that Raptor Lake uses to maintain the same amount of performance.
Additionally, OneRaichu suggests that the Meteor Lake’s iGPU with 128 Execution Units (EU) and operating at >2 GHz may end up being twice as fast as the 96 EU Iris Xe iGPU. For reference, the Iris Xe is on par with a GeForce MX350 and is not really suitable for gaming. So, it remains to be seen whether the MTL iGPU is anything special, especially compared to the new Radeon 780M featured in AMD Ryzen 7040 Phoenix-HS APUs.
Finally, take the alleged efficiency target as just a rumor and strictly non-official. We can only be certain about the efficiency gains once Intel releases the 14th gen Meteor Lake chips and reviewers get to test the CPUs.
The target of Meteor is to realize 1.5x+ efficiency compare to the Raptor when it has the same perf. (same core processor, P+E)????
