LG’s new Portable Tower Speaker takes the RGB lighting of its XBOOM series and re-imagines it in a whole new way. The “ring-light” around its main forward-facing driver is joined by a Matrix LED display that can show a range of animations, text banners or other effects, some of which can be customized in its app. It is now available on the US market.
The ROG Zephyrus G14 seems to have found its ideal audio companion in the latest XBOOM-series speaker. Then again, LG touts it as more of an all-in-one party machine, with a new “Dot Matrix LED” display that “allows users to personalize their speaker with a combination of colors and dynamic ring lighting movements“.
The latter is generated via the large RGB circle found around the Portable Tower Speaker’s main driver housing, topped with its old-school LED array that can be set to display full-color Space Invaders-like characters.
Alternatively, users can set them to read custom text or reproduce original effects. Besides that, the 2.1 channel Tower Speaker, or XL7, is rated for a 250-watt (W) output via its 8-inch “full-range” woofer and 2.5-inch tweeter.
All of that LG Dynamic Bass Optimizer-enhanced audio power is packed into an IPX4-rated form-factor with a handy telescopic handle and “smooth, gliding” wheels.
The XL7 can be controlled either with its top-mounted physical controls or via the same XBOOM app through which its Dot Matrix LED lighting can be controlled or customized, and boasts Bluetooth in addition to an AUX input.
LG asserts that the Portable Tower Speaker has a battery that can last for 20 hours per charge, although that would be with the LEDs off and ideal connectivity. The XBOOM XL7 leads its series’ 2023 line-up onto LG.com or select retailers throughout the US for US$599.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
