The FCC has now published initial documentation for what is believed to be the Pixel Watch 2. Apparently, Google has prepared three variants, including a US-specific cellular option. Two new metal watch band options may be available too, although the Pixel Watch 2 appears to lack rumoured UWB integration.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has certified an unreleased Google smartwatch, a crucial step before a device’s release in the US. Currently, the smartwatch is presumed to be the Pixel Watch 2, which is assumed to be on track for an autumn release with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Incidentally, a promotional video showing the latter and ‘Audio Magic Eraser’ also recently leaked, which we have covered separately.
Seemingly, Google has created three Pixel Watch 2 variants, distinguished by their connectivity options. Based on the documentation published so far, G4TSL is the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi-only version of the Pixel Watch 2, with GC3G8 and GD2WG serving as regional cellular models. As 9to5Google notes, the latter’s support for more LTE bands makes it a candidate for the US cellular model, with Google likely offering GC3G8 in other markets.
The website adds that it cannot find references to ultra-wide-band (UWB) support for any of the three models, contrary to a previous leak. While Google may have included UWB in earlier prototypes, the FCC would have documented its inclusion if it were present. Thus, it appears that the Pixel Watch may have missed out on the nascent functionality for another generation.
Separately, the FCC mentions that it tested the Pixel Watch 2 with four straps, including the Mesh Mesh that Google revealed for the Pixel Watch but never sold. With the Pixel Watch 2 expected to retain its predecessor’s proprietary watch straps, the Metal Mesh may yet receive a release. The same listing references a ‘Metal slim strap’ too, which may well be a completely new accessory. Although pricing and renders have not surfaced yet, various other Pixel Watch 2 details have already leaked, as have pictures of first-party watch faces.
