MediaTek and Federated Wireless have announced that products such as 5G hotspots and Ethernet gateways powered by Filogic chips for either Wi-Fi 7 or 6E stand to benefit from improved capacity, speed and range, as they are now more compatible with the 6GHz band on Automated
Frequency Coordination (AFC) systems. The chips’ new certification is touted as an important step toward their inclusion into standardized devices approved by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC).
Federated Wireless is a provider of “transformational” fixed and private wireless solutions, and is provisionally approved by the FCC to run the AFC system required to manage spectrum (particularly those of the 850MHz variety) access by standard-power devices such as 5G CPEs and wired (Ethernet or fiber) gateways in the 6GHz band.
However, the chips that power such products need to pass the group’s “AFC Device-to-AFC System interoperability testing” before they can do so.
This validation involves a “comprehensive set of positive and negative tests drawn from the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) AFC System certification specification“, as well as the WFA Standard Device Interface battery of data security– and privacy-focused trials.
MediaTek has devoted part of its CES 2023 appearance to the announcement that its latest Filogic platforms, rated to deliver Wi-Fi 6E or the even newer 7 standard, have just achieved this “milestone“.
Passing this “critical” test of compatibility is now backed by MediaTek as one of the last steps in getting indoor and outdoor devices powered by new Filogic chips approved for sale on the US market.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
