Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels said the ‘next few days will be brutal’ after his side gifted Bayern Munich an 11th straight Bundesliga title.

Dortmund led by two points going into the final day but a 2-2 draw at home to Mainz, allowed Bayern, who won 2-1 at Cologne, to win on goal difference.

Dortmund were hoping to win their first league title for 11 years.

“It’s going to be difficult to digest. It will take more than a few days,” said captain Hummels.

A tearful Dortmund manager Edin Terzic was seen in front of the club’s famous yellow wall after the final whistle, as the fans chanted the Dortmund-born coach’s name.

“You can see how hard and how tough this sport that we fell in love with can be,” Terzic said, adding “it hurts extremely – will be no happy ending for us this year.”

Dortmund led the table four times this season, but each time dropped points and allowed Bayern to return to the summit.

The expectant home fans, who had turned up for a party, were stunned as Mainz raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time, with Sebastian Haller having a penalty saved for the hosts.

After pulling a goal back through Raphael Guerreiro, Dortmund thought they had been handed a reprieve when Cologne levelled against Bayern Munich with nine minutes left.

But, with the title heading for Dortmund and the home fans starting to celebrate, Jamal Musiala’s 89th-minute winner secured the title for Bayern – despite a late equaliser for Terzic’s side.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham, an unused substitute due to a knee injury, was filmed pushing a camera away from his face as he left the field in tears.

It could be the 19-year-old’s last game for Dortmund, with Real Madrid in advanced talks for his signature this summer.

Midfielder Emre Can added: “We gave everything as a team but it wasn’t to be.”

“We wanted it but in the end we didn’t make it.”
