Garrett Mitchell, Tyrone Taylor, Gus Varland, Sal Frelick and Matt Bush, Brewers
In speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said that Mitchell will be undergoing shoulder surgery after getting a second opinion. He said the surgery will likely happen next week, and that Mitchell is probably out for the year.
After playing a week of games in Arizona, Taylor was promoted to Milwaukee’s top affiliate to begin what could be a relatively extended stint as he comes back from a right elbow injury.
Varland landed on the 15-day IL on April 16, a day after he was struck on the right hand by a comebacker that glanced his chin and his left forearm. Varland expects to pitch for the Timber Rattlers on Thursday and Saturday before joining the Brewers for their trip to Colorado and San Francisco next week. More>

Yasmani Grandal, Tim Anderson and Yoán Moncada, White Sox
Grandal is considered day to day after leaving Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays in the seventh inning with back spasms, manager Pedro Grifol said. The team will see how Grandal feels before Wednesday’s finale in Toronto, but Grifol expects the catcher will be available as a backup.
Anderson (sprained left knee) is close to heading out on an injury rehab assignment after running the bases on Monday and Tuesday in Toronto. The shortstop will need 10 to 14 at-bats in the Minors before he’ll rejoin the MLB club, according to Grifol.
Moncada (lower back soreness) is feeling better, but “still a little ways” from returning to games, Grifol said in Toronto on Tuesday. The infielder has done mobility drills and taken swings from the left side in recent days. More>
Logan Gilbert, Dylan Moore and Andrés Muñoz, Mariners
Gilbert experienced muscle spasms in the back of his right shoulder when working out at T-Mobile Park on April 23. The pain, however, has subsided to the point where he felt capable of remaining on turn in the rotation when the club opened a three-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday. However, the Mariners instead opted to hold him back to Wednesday as a precaution.
Moore (core surgery) met with the doctor who performed his offseason surgery in Philadelphia, where the Mariners just so happened to begin a three-game series on Tuesday. An MRI revealed scar tissue in his left groin area, which they addressed with a cortisone shot. Moore will return to the club’s Spring Training facility in Arizona to map out a more specialized recovery plan.
Muñoz (right deltoid strain) reported to the club’s Spring Training facility on Tuesday and was slated to throw a live BP session there before joining Triple-A Tacoma in Las Vegas this weekend to begin a rehab assignment. More>
Bryce Harper, Ranger Suárez and Andrew Painter, Phillies
Harper, who squared off with the rehabbing Suárez for a second time in a sim game prior to the club’s Saturday matchup against the Rockies, will have his highly anticipated follow-up appointment with Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the start of May. If Harper receives clearance at that appointment, his return to the Phillies’ lineup “shouldn’t be too far after that,” manager Rob Thomson said Thursday. More>

After his April 23 bullpen session went smoothly, Márquez will officially come off the 15-day injured list (retroactive to April 11) on Wednesday to start the series finale against the Guardians. Chang left Monday night’s game against the Orioles with left wrist pain after appearing to sustain the injury on a swing-and-miss and was placed on the injured list on Tuesday with a left hamate fracture.
In a move described as precautionary, second baseman Arroyo exited in the bottom of the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 8-6 victory over the Orioles with tightness in his right hamstring. Manager Alex Cora was “hopeful” that Arroyo will be available for Wednesday’s game. More>

Melendez was out of the lineup for a second day on Tuesday against the D-backs as he recovers from lower back spasms first suffered Sunday against the Angels, but he’s feeling much better than he did the previous two days. The expectation is to have him return to the lineup in the next couple of days and avoid an IL stint. More>
