Ever since the very first MTV Video Music Awards ceremony in 1984, the awards show’s red carpet has been a place for the entertainment industry’s hottest stars and promising up-and-comers to display their most daring, envelope-pushing looks. Tuesday’s VMAs 2023 red carpet, at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center, promises to be just as exciting. Just last year, Taylor Swift dazzled on the carpet in a dress draped with rhinestone ropes, while Lil Nas X made an indelible fashion statement in an ethereal, raven-hued feathered ensemble. Other notable VMA outfits have included the purple half-jumpsuit and accompanying nipple petal worn by Lil Kim’ in 1999; the red velvet suit rocked by Gwyneth Paltrow in 1996; the lace minidress donned by Britney Spears in 2001; and many, many more.
Even more eyes than usual are on this year’s VMAs 2023 red carpet and its fashion, as the ongoing double strike by the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA has all but ground Hollywood events to a halt. With a ban on most promotion of film and TV projects, and with many in the entertainment industry standing in solidarity with the striking unions, there’s been a distinct lack of red-carpet fashion for the public to feast upon and admire. Tonight, enthusiasts can only hope, looks will be served. After all, it’s not every day the VMAs have their 40-year anniversary.
